What Documents Do I Need to Buy a Car in Nevada?
Buying a car in Nevada can feel much easier when you arrive prepared. Whether you're purchasing your first vehicle, replacing your current car, trading in a vehicle, or shopping from outside Nevada, knowing what information to bring can help make your dealership visit more organized.
I’m Marisol Your Car Girl, a sales representative at Findlay Nissan Henderson. I created this guide to help car buyers in Las Vegas, Henderson, and surrounding Nevada communities understand what they may want to prepare before shopping for their next vehicle.
Every purchase is different. The documents and information needed can vary depending on whether you're financing, paying cash, trading in a vehicle, or purchasing from outside Nevada. Financing requirements can also vary by lender.
If you're ready to begin looking, you can start with Shop Vehicles or Schedule an Appointment With Marisol.
What Documents Should I Bring to Buy a Car in Nevada?
Depending on your particular transaction, there are several documents and pieces of information you may want to have ready before visiting the dealership.
1. Government-Issued Identification
Bring a current government-issued photo ID appropriate for your transaction.
If you're planning to test drive a vehicle, you'll also need to meet the dealership's identification and driving requirements before taking a vehicle on the road.
If you've never taken a dealership test drive before, read What Happens During a Test Drive? before your appointment.
2. Automobile Insurance Information
If you're purchasing a vehicle, be prepared to provide the insurance information required before taking delivery.
It can be helpful to contact your insurance company before visiting the dealership. Tell them you're shopping for a vehicle and ask what you'll need when you're ready to add or replace a vehicle on your policy.
Insurance costs can vary from one vehicle to another, so checking potential insurance costs while you're shopping may also help you better understand the overall cost of owning the vehicle.
3. Financing Information
If you're planning to finance your purchase, the lender may request additional information or documentation.
Depending on the lender and your circumstances, that could include information concerning your identity, residence, employment, income, or other financial information.
The lender ultimately determines its approval criteria, documentation requirements, interest rate, and financing terms.
If you're trying to prepare before your visit, Schedule With Marisol and ask what you should bring for your particular situation.
4. Your Down Payment
If you're planning to make a down payment, know approximately how much you're comfortable contributing toward your purchase.
You should also confirm which payment methods can be accepted for your particular transaction.
There isn't one down-payment amount that's right for every buyer. If you're trying to decide how much you should set aside, read How Much Money Should I Put Down on a Car?.
5. Trade-In Documents
If you're trading in your current vehicle, you'll want to bring information for the trade as well.
Depending on your situation, this may include your vehicle registration, available ownership or lien information, keys, remotes, and other information requested to process the trade.
You can begin the process online through Marisol's Trade-In page.
For a more detailed checklist, read What Should I Bring When Trading In My Car?.
6. Current Loan Information for Your Trade-In
Still making payments on your current vehicle? That doesn't necessarily mean you can't discuss trading it in.
Have your lender and loan information available so the appropriate payoff information can be obtained during the trade-in process.
Two numbers become especially important: the vehicle's trade-in value and the amount required to satisfy the existing loan.
I've created a separate guide explaining this in more detail: How Does Trading In a Car With a Loan Work?.

If you're still unsure about what you need, you can Contact Marisol before your appointment.
What If I'm Financing My Vehicle?
Financing a vehicle is different from simply shopping for one.
If you're applying for financing, the lender determines the information and documentation needed to evaluate your application. Requirements can vary according to the lender, applicant, and transaction.
Depending on the circumstances, additional information concerning your identity, residence, employment, income, or financial history may be requested.
Financing approval is never guaranteed, and Marisol does not determine lender approvals, interest rates, or financing terms.
What Marisol can do is help you start the vehicle-shopping process, answer questions about the dealership experience, and help you identify vehicles you may want to consider.
Start by browsing Shop Vehicles.
Can I Buy a Car With an ITIN in Las Vegas?
Some customers use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, commonly called an ITIN, rather than a Social Security number.
Buying a vehicle and qualifying for financing are separate issues.
Some lenders may consider applicants using an ITIN, while other lenders may have different identification, credit, or documentation requirements.
If you're shopping with an ITIN, don't assume that you automatically can or cannot qualify for financing. Ask about your situation before your dealership visit.

What If I'm Trading In My Current Car?
Trading in your current vehicle can be part of the process of purchasing your next one.
Before your appointment, gather the available keys and remotes, registration, ownership or lien information, and your lender information if you're still making payments.
You can start by providing information about your current vehicle through Marisol's Trade-In page.
Then read these two resources:

These guides can help you understand what to prepare before your vehicle is evaluated.
Can I Trade In a Car If I Still Owe Money on It?
Having an existing auto loan doesn't necessarily prevent you from discussing a trade-in.
The dealership will need information about your current loan and the vehicle itself.
Your vehicle's trade-in value can then be compared with the current amount required to satisfy the existing loan.
If the trade value is higher than the loan payoff, the difference may represent positive equity. If the payoff is higher than the trade value, there may be negative equity to address as part of the transaction.
How that difference is ultimately handled depends on the transaction and, when financing is involved, lender approval and applicable terms.

What If I'm a First-Time Car Buyer?
Buying your first car can bring a lot of questions.
You don't need to know everything about the process before you begin.
Start by thinking about what you actually need from your vehicle:
-
How much passenger space do you need?
-
How much cargo space?
-
How far is your normal commute?
-
Is fuel economy important?
-
What technology or safety features matter to you?
-
Are you considering new, pre-owned, or both?
-
Do you have a vehicle to trade?
-
What overall budget are you comfortable with?
Once you've thought through those questions, you'll have a much better starting point.
Read the First-Time Car Buyer Checklist and then Shop Vehicles when you're ready to start comparing your options.
How Much Money Should I Put Down on a Car?
There isn't one perfect down payment for every car buyer.
A down payment generally reduces the portion of the transaction that needs to be financed. But that doesn't automatically mean using all of your available cash is appropriate for your financial situation.
Your vehicle price, taxes and fees, trade-in equity, interest rate, financing term, and lender requirements can all affect the transaction.
Rather than focusing only on a target monthly payment, review the complete financing terms presented to you.
For more information, read How Much Money Should I Put Down on a Car?.
Should I Buy a New or Pre-Owned Vehicle?
There isn't one answer that works for every buyer.
A new vehicle may appeal to someone looking for current features, no previous ownership history, and applicable new-vehicle warranty coverage.
A pre-owned vehicle can provide access to different model years, trims, features, mileage, and price points.
The better approach is often to compare actual vehicles that meet your needs rather than deciding based solely on the words "new" or "used."
Read New vs. Used Car: What Should I Consider? and then browse Shop Vehicles.
What Should I Expect During a Test Drive?
A test drive gives you an opportunity to experience a vehicle beyond its photos and specifications.
Once you're in the driver's seat, pay attention to more than acceleration.
Consider the seating position, visibility, headroom, legroom, passenger space, cargo room, controls, infotainment system, braking, steering, comfort, and how the vehicle feels during normal driving.
Think about your everyday life too. If you regularly carry children, passengers, work equipment, groceries, or other cargo, consider whether the vehicle works for those needs.
Before your appointment, read What Happens During a Test Drive?.
When you're ready, Schedule an Appointment With Marisol.
Can I Buy a Car in Nevada If I Live in Another State?
You don't necessarily have to live in Nevada to shop for a vehicle here.
Marisol has worked with customers shopping from outside Las Vegas, including customers living in other states.
An out-of-state purchase, however, can involve additional considerations involving taxes, registration, titling, financing, transportation, or documentation depending on your home state and the particular transaction.
If you're shopping from California, Arizona, Utah, New York, or anywhere else outside Nevada, start with the Out-of-State Buyers page.
Then read Can I Buy a Car in Nevada If I Live in Another State?.
You can begin your vehicle search with Marisol before making the trip to Henderson.
What Do I Need to Bring to a Dealership?
What you should bring depends partly on what you're planning to do that day.
If you're browsing, you may simply be comparing vehicles.
If you're taking a test drive, you'll need to meet the dealership's requirements for driving the vehicle.
If you're ready to purchase, additional identification, insurance, payment, financing, or trade-in information may be needed depending on your transaction.
For a visit-specific checklist, read What Do I Need to Bring to a Dealership?.
